Running in place.

For every positive step I take in life, there seems to be an equal amount of counterforce pushing me back.

I had a moderately successful day today finding some "missing" costume pieces for the cast of the one act play that I am directing, along with a donkey head, which I had begun to worry about. And so I went in to today's rehearsal feeling good, but before I could get in to the auditorium itself, my lead actor (who is playing TWO major roles) tells me that he is definitely transferring to another school after our first competition.

A part of me just wanted to scrap the whole thing, but there are too many kids who have worked too hard on this already, so after rehearsal I told them of the situation. They all seem a little down, but rather than give in or give up, they began to brainstorm to see if there was anyone they might know that they could ask to step in to the role on the chance that we move on in competition.

What a damned frustration, though, let me tell you!

That definitely sucks. What's his reason for transfering schools? I suppose this would be semester time, but it definitely makes it hard on you and the rest of the cast. Did you have any inling of this beforehand?

Have you considered the possibiity of replacing him now instead of later?

Did I have any inkling of this? Yes, I did. He mentioned the possibilty of it early. I said I would discuss it with the principal to get a "ruling" on it. He discussed it with the regional one act coordinator for MSHSL. All they said was that a student HAD to be enrolled in the school. I told my student and he said, "So I need to stay here for another week to do Sections?" I said, "If you want to be in the play." That seemed to be the end of the discussion until he came to me the other day to say that the guidance couselor told him that he'd be missing too much school at his new school if he waited another week, so he thought he'd have to leave right after sub-section.

Replace him now? I don't think so. He's the right person for the role(s), and the two roles he plays are the largest. It's a lot to ask someone to learn in time for sub-section (even if I HAD one or two more males who could do it). Also...there really is no certainty of our moving on, so I'd like to take my best cast as far as we can go.
