I just can't believe the reports that I continue to read about the lack of relief and how the survivors of the hurricane were treated as they tried desparately to get out of towns and sought water and food.
Will there really be any accurate accounting for all this? Even my friend Oz, who always has a kind word for everyone, writes negatively about the FEMA relief (Winona Boys blog).
If this is the response to an "expected" disaster, how will we come through an unexpected disaster of a grand scale?
I use this theme in a new play I've been working on, though I approach it from a different point of view. As a viewer, I am insensed. As an artist, I am inspired.

And now the director of FEMA has been replaced as the head of the relief effort in the gulf, though his job appears to be secure. Like others in the Bush administration, doing a poor job at something is more likely to earn him a commendation.
K--
I deleted your comment, though reluctantly. There's just nothing as good as an off the cuff remark, complete with expletives!
I fully support the Red Cross, but want to add that a number of years ago I read a fact sheet about relief organizations and where the money goes in those organizations. I wish I could remember the exact order, but one group which is rarely mentioned is either number one or two in the fact that more of their monetary donations goes directly to where it is needed, rather than to salaries. The group is Lutheran World Federation, which is located in Geneva and is tied, not surprisingly to Lutheran churches all over the world (though it is not run by the Lutheran churches).
They don't have the brand recognition of Red Cross (like you mentioned, K), but I know my money to them goes directly to relief and not for the hand-crafted, cherry wood desk in someone's office.
